Italy – Narrow gauge railways

Società Subalpina di Imprese Ferroviarie

Formed in 1912, SSIF (Società Subalpina di Imprese Ferroviarie – “lower alps railway managing company”) operates the 1000mm narrow gauge electrified cross-border (Italy-Switzerland) Domodossola-Locarno Railway, togheter with it’s swiss counterpart, FART. SSIF manages the 32Km-long Italian section (known as the “Vigezzina Railway”, running between Domodossola and Ribellasca stations) of the 52Km-long line, and it operates both “domestic” local services on Italian soil as well as international cross-border services running seamlessly between Domodossola and Locarno.
